Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Los Angeles, CA

Irregularities in the shape or size of your ears, due to natural causes, stretching or other factors, shouldn’t be allowed to affect your positive self-image negatively. Nobody wants to be called “Dumbo” or to let childhood teasing leave a lasting impression from the schoolyard. From small children to adults with aesthetic ear issues, an otoplasty (ear surgery), performed at Beverly Hills Breast and Body Institute by board-certified plastic surgeon Jaime S. Schwartz, M.D., F.A.C.S., can help Beverly Hills and Los Angeles area residents who want to repair the aesthetics of their ears.

What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?

Say goodbye to Dumbo ears, torn earlobes or gauged earlobes. Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that changes the size and shape of the ears. Unfortunately, many children and adults are subjected to all kinds of unkind comments because of their ears, and an otoplasty procedure can be the perfect solution to eliminate this issue forever. Set up your consultation now and let Dr. Schwartz’s compassionate approach help you take control of this problem.

Benefits of Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Dr. Schwartz is very gentle and kind. He will listen to all of your needs and explain everything in great detail when it comes to the question of the benefits of otoplasty (ear surgery). The main benefit of otoplasty is overcoming the stigma associated with different shaped ears that may affect a patient’s self-esteem and sense of well-being.

Is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Right For Me?

Do you or a loved one have ears that are too large when compared to other facial proportions, misshapen ears due to congenital defects or injury or ears that excessively stand out from the side of the head? Commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, otoplasty (ear surgery) can also affect the size and shape of your ears, which may improve hearing. If the patient is a child, Dr. Schwartz is particularly empathetic with little ones and can help you and your child understand what the procedure will be like and if it is right for them. Schedule your consultation now, and feel free to speak candidly with Dr. Schwartz about the benefits of otoplasty and if the procedure is right for you or your loved one.

Elements of an Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Dr. Schwartz may recommend surgery on both ears, even if only one ear is aesthetically problematic because making corrections to both of your ears ensures an overall aesthetic balance and symmetry to your facial structure and appearance. The plan for your ear surgery will be based on your own unique needs, but typically the surgery takes three hours or less with a focus on making the necessary corrections to your ears while reducing the visibility of any scars.

What Is An Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Procedure?

Dr. Schwartz will explain the technique that he will use to improve your ears, and he will also provide you with details about your post-surgical care. The internal structures of your ears, such as the cartilage, can be accessed by making incisions behind your ear and then by removing cartilage, skin and other tissues. Dr. Schwartz will be able to reduce the size of the ears while creating a new, more proportionate shape that highlights your overall facial structure. He may also use sutures to “pin” the ears closer to the head, depending on your desired results.

How Long Is The Recovery After An Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Procedure?

Following your otoplasty with Dr. Schwartz, you can return home the same day as your surgery. However, you may be groggy for up to 24 hours. We recommend that someone drive you home and stay with you for the first few days. Dr. Schwartz will wrap your head and ears in bandages to help with the healing process and to help prevent any injuries. You may have some discomfort, in which case Dr. Schwartz may prescribe medications or recommend an over-the-counter solution. After three days, you will return for a follow-up office visit, at which point your bandages will be removed, and Dr. Schwartz will examine your incisions and apply a lighter bandage wrapping to your head and ears. Seven days after your surgery, Dr. Schwartz will remove the lightweight bandages and sutures. For the most part, adult patients who undergo ear surgery will need to remain at home for five full days while children will need to stay at home from school for approximately one week. Complete healing takes about four to six weeks, and Dr. Schwartz will provide you with a checklist so you will be able to protect your ears during that time as they heal.
