Elements of a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
With Dr. Schwartz, your eyelid surgery is performed using local anesthesia that will numb the area around your eyes. You may also be provided with an oral or intravenous sedative, which means that you will be awake during the procedure. However, your body will be relaxed, and you will be insensitive to any pain. You may feel some pulling or some tugging and the occasional slight sense of discomfort. A few patients prefer to use general anesthesia, in which case you will sleep throughout the entire procedure. Blepharoplasty takes between one and three hours.
What Is a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Procedure?
Discover the solution to droopy eyelids with the surgical expertise of Dr. Schwartz. During a typical procedure, Dr. Schwartz will make incisions adhering to the natural lines of your eyelids, which are the creases in your upper lids and the folds underneath the lashes on your lower lids. These incisions will go all the way to the crow’s feet or the laugh lines that sit on the outer corner of your eye. Dr. Schwartz will work using these incisions to separate the skin from the fatty tissue and muscle underneath it. He will also remove excess fatty deposits and trim skin and sagging muscle. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed with very fine sutures. A transconjunctival blepharoplasty treats pockets of fat underneath your lower eyelid in cases where it is not necessary to remove excess skin. This procedure is performed by making a small incision in the lower eyelid. It will not leave a scar that is visible and is usually better suited for patients who are younger or who have thicker, more elastic skin.
How Long Is The Recovery After a Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Procedure?
Once your procedure is complete, Dr. Schwartz will likely use an ointment to lubricate your eyes before applying a bandage over them. You should expect your eyelids to feel a little light, and a little sore as the anesthesia wears off. However, Dr. Schwartz will if necessary prescribe medication to help you control any postoperative discomfort, in addition to advising you to keep your head elevated and use cold compresses for a few days to reduce the swelling and bruising. The amount of bruising experienced will vary from person to person. In most instances, bruising lasts between two weeks and one month, with the greatest level of discomfort experienced during the first week. Dr. Schwartz will give you instructions on how to clean your eyes, which you may experience have a gummy substance on them during the first week. Your stitches will be removed between two days and one week after your surgery, and once your stitches have been removed, you can expect any discoloration or swelling around your eyes to gradually disappear.
